Writing About Health
by redsaf
Health is a broad term that covers a person’s emotional, mental and physical well-being. It can include eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and having strong relationships with others. It also includes having access to quality healthcare and avoiding disease. Health is important for coping with stress and living a longer life. Writing about health requires a wide range of skills, including understanding medical terminology, researching the latest research and trends in the field, and finding a way to connect the information to a wider audience. It can be a challenge to find the right tone, whether writing a personal story about overcoming a health issue or an in-depth piece that explores the complexities of the topic.
Using an effective title is essential to grab readers’ attention. This can be done by creating a catchy, provocative or evocative headline, which then leads into the body of the article. In addition, the writer needs to consider the format of the piece, such as a news report, an in-depth feature story or a profile of a researcher looking at a new treatment. This will influence how much background research is required and what kind of information the reader should be expecting.
A key challenge in writing about health is how to define it. The definition can range from a narrow biomedical definition, which is simply the absence of negative biologic circumstances (altered DNA, abnormal physiologic states, disease or infirmity), to the broad definition adopted by the World Health Organization: “health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
Another challenge is determining how to measure health. This can be a difficult task because it is influenced by many factors that are outside the control of the medical and public health systems. For example, a person’s level of health may be affected by the conditions in their community, such as working conditions, housing, education, food availability and safety. This can make it challenging to assess the impact of a new medical procedure or treatment on health outcomes.
It is also necessary to understand how different people perceive the concept of health. A review of the 75 articles that were analyzed revealed that most articles described multiple concepts and dimensions of health. The most common subthemes identified were multi-sided, adapting to change, complete wellbeing or functioning and satisfying life. The supplemental table shows the number of articles that discussed each of these themes, grouped by perspective (theme 1 and theme 2) (Supplementary Table 3).
In addition to examining the concept of health, it is important to understand the context within which the idea was conceived. This will help the writer determine if the idea is relevant and if it is worth covering in an article. This will also influence how the information is presented to readers. For example, if the topic is an emerging disease or trend in medicine, the writer should focus on new information that has not yet been published.
