The Definition of Health

In the context of human health, the word “Health” is used to describe the extent to which a person’s body functions normally. As such, it is a very broad term that encompasses many aspects of the human condition. Some of these include the immune system, mental function and social functioning. Health is an elusive concept and is not easily defined. In contrast, disease is often recognizable and tangible, and it is relatively easy to measure.

One definition of health is that it consists of the absence of any disease or impairment. This is the view that has traditionally been held by doctors. The problem with this view is that it fails to take into account the effects of a wide variety of environmental factors on a person’s health. For example, a person who is allergic to a certain substance may suffer anything from a mild irritation such as a rash to severe anaphylactic shock, coma or death depending on the circumstances and severity of the reaction.

A second definition of health consists of the ability to function, both physically and emotionally. This view includes the idea that a person is able to achieve their goals and fulfil their potential. It is this dimension of health that has gained the most traction in recent years. It also provides a more accurate reflection of the real nature of health than the simplistic view that it is simply the absence of disease.

Other definitions of health have focused on behavioural and environmental factors that affect a person’s ability to function. These are sometimes referred to as the ‘health determinants’. They have been shown to be closely related to health outcomes, and are important contributing factors in the avoidable differences in health status seen within and between groups and countries (Commission on Social Determinants of Health 2008).

A third view of health focuses on a balance between an individual’s capacity to adapt to their environment and their vulnerability to environmental influences. This is often viewed as the most desirable state of health and is associated with wellness. This involves an active process of growth and change to reach one’s personal best. It is often associated with activities such as exercise, a healthy diet and spiritual practice.

The healthcare industry consists of the businesses that provide medical or health services to individuals and communities. This includes hospitals, clinical laboratories and pathology clinics. It also includes allied health care services such as physical therapy, physiotherapy and counselling. The healthcare sector is a significant contributor to the economy and is a major employer. However, it is also a large source of stress and financial strain for families. It is therefore vital that the sector continues to innovate and develop new products and services, as well as improve efficiency and quality of service. This will enable it to meet the increasing demand for these services while reducing costs. This will in turn lead to improved health for all.
